Carefully peel the pears, leaving the storks in place.
Cut the bottom of the pears so that they can be served stood up later. Optionally prick the pears gently several times so the flavour can permeate the pears.
In the slow cooker, cover the pears with water. Add sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon sticks and star anise.
Cook for 1.5-2 hours on high or until soft.
Carefully remove. Sprinkle the pears with ground cinnamon or cocoa powder. Serve with ice cream.
